Renton RMC 4-4-040 bans barbed wire, razor wire, and electrified fences in residential zones; wood, vinyl, chain link, metal, and masonry are allowed with some front yard limits on chain link.
Renton Municipal Code 4-4-040 regulates fence materials in addition to height and placement. Allowed residential materials include cedar and other wood, vinyl, ornamental wrought iron, aluminum, and masonry (brick, CMU, stone). Chain link is allowed but some residential zones and many HOA covenants restrict its use in front yards facing public streets. Prohibited materials in residential zones include barbed wire, razor wire, concertina wire, and any electrified fencing. Corrugated metal, sheet metal, and salvage materials that are not designed for fencing are typically prohibited as detracting from neighborhood aesthetics. Temporary construction fencing of orange mesh or chain link is allowed during active permits. In industrial zones, barbed wire may be permitted on top of fences at least six feet high with administrative approval and proper setback. Security fencing in the Renton Municipal Airport and Boeing 737 plant areas is permitted under federal aviation security requirements.
