Auburn restricts electric and barbed-wire fences in residential zones under ACC 18.31.020. Wood, vinyl, chain link, and ornamental iron are allowed. RC agricultural zones may allow barbed wire.
Auburn City Code 18.31.020 regulates fence materials alongside height. In residential zones, electrically charged fences and barbed-wire fences are prohibited or heavily restricted for safety reasons. Standard materials that are allowed include wood (cedar, treated pine), vinyl and PVC, chain link, ornamental wrought iron and aluminum, masonry and stone, and composite materials. Razor wire is prohibited citywide outside of specifically approved industrial and correctional facility uses. Agricultural zones (RC) and some industrial zones may allow top-mounted barbed-wire strands on fences 6 feet or taller with additional review. Corrugated metal, sheet metal, and pallet fences are generally disallowed in the front setback area as out-of-character for most residential subdivisions and frequently flagged by HOAs. The code does not require specific finish or color but HOAs in Lakeland Hills, Lea Hill, and other subdivisions routinely mandate natural stains, pre-approved colors, and uniform profiles. Temporary construction fencing (orange plastic, chain link panels) is allowed during active construction with the building permit and must come down at final inspection.
Installation of prohibited materials (electric, razor wire, barbed wire in residential) is a zoning violation under ACC 18.31.020. Code Compliance issues notice of correction with required removal.
