San Francisco accepts code violation reports through SF 311 by phone (dial 311 or 415-701-2311), online at sf311.org, or via the SF311 mobile app. DBI Code Enforcement handles building and housing complaints. Reports can be filed anonymously.
San Francisco's Department of Building Inspection (DBI) Code Enforcement Section investigates complaints of building and housing code violations. Reports can be submitted by dialing 311 (or 415-701-2311 from outside SF), online at sf311.org, or through the SF311 mobile app. DBI also accepts complaints directly through their Complaint Tracking System at dbiweb02.sfgov.org. The system allows filing complaints about construction without permits, electrical/plumbing/fire safety violations, substandard living conditions, and disability access issues. Anonymous complaints are accepted. After filing, a case number is assigned. The DBI Permit and Complaint Tracking System allows residents to search by address for permits and complaints. Common reportable issues include illegal construction, unpermitted work, substandard housing, and safety hazards.
No penalty for reporting. DBI inspection results in Notice of Violation if confirmed.
