Arlington Heights requires fences to be maintained in good condition, properly aligned within property lines, and constructed with the finished side facing outward. Fences must not obstruct drainage or encroach on public right-of-way.
The Village of Arlington Heights general fence regulations require that all fences be maintained in good structural condition, free from leaning, missing sections, and deterioration. Fences must be constructed with the finished or decorative side facing neighboring properties and the public right-of-way. Fences may not be placed in public right-of-way, utility easements, or sight triangles at intersections. Setbacks from property lines are not required (fences may be placed on the property line), but they must not encroach onto neighboring property. Fences must not obstruct natural drainage patterns or create stormwater problems for adjacent properties. Electrified fences are prohibited in residential districts. Razor wire and concertina wire are not permitted on residential property. All fence installations require a building permit from Community Development at (847) 368-5200.
Fences in disrepair, improperly oriented, or encroaching on the right-of-way may receive code enforcement notices with compliance deadlines. Fines range from $50 to $250 per violation.
