Skokie requires fences to be well-maintained, plumb, and structurally sound. Fences must be constructed of approved materials, installed with the finished side facing neighbors, and kept in good repair. Deteriorated fences may be cited as property maintenance violations.
Beyond height and permit rules, Skokie's general fence requirements mandate that fences be constructed of approved materials (wood, vinyl, aluminum, wrought iron, or chain link in allowed areas), installed plumb and true, and maintained in good structural condition. Leaning, rotted, broken, or missing sections must be repaired promptly. Fences may not obstruct drainage or create hazards. The finished side with concealed posts and rails must face the adjoining property or public right-of-way. Corner lot sight triangles require fences at street intersections to be no more than 3 feet tall. Painting and staining are permitted without additional permits. Contact Community Development at (847) 933-8235 for requirements or to report deteriorated fences.
Deteriorated fences receive code enforcement notices with compliance deadlines. Fines from $50 to $500 apply for failure to repair. In severe cases the village may order removal. Non-approved materials (such as pallets or scrap) must be replaced with compliant fencing.
