All Skokie STRs must register with the Village under the 2026 pilot ordinance. Existing operators were required to register by April 1, 2026, and new licenses are limited to owner-occupied units β capped at one per block. Each applicant must complete Village training and notify neighbors within 250 feet.
The 2026 pilot ordinance requires every person offering an STR in Skokie to register with the Village, obtain an operator license, complete a mandatory Village training program, pass a building inspection, and give written notice to every property within 250 feet of the unit. Existing investor-owned STRs had until April 1, 2026 to register and be grandfathered; unregistered investor-owned units are no longer permitted. Going forward, new licenses are only issued to owner-occupied STRs, and are capped at one license per block to prevent concentration. The Village maintains a public registry of licensed STRs. Licenses must be renewed annually, and material changes to the property or operation must be reported to the Village Clerk.
Operating an unregistered STR is a pilot-ordinance violation carrying fines up to $1,500 per offense. Repeated non-compliance can trigger cease-and-desist orders, administrative adjudication, and permanent ineligibility for future licensing.
