Arlington Heights requires pools to be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches high with self-closing, self-latching gates. Pool barriers must comply with the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code as adopted by the village.
The Village of Arlington Heights adopts the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code requiring all in-ground and above-ground swimming pools to be completely enclosed by a barrier. Pool barriers must be at least 48 inches in height measured from the finished grade on the exterior side. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with latches located at least 54 inches above grade or otherwise inaccessible to small children. Barrier openings must not allow passage of a 4-inch sphere. Chain-link fencing used as a pool barrier must have openings no larger than 1.75 inches. Above-ground pools with walls at least 48 inches above grade may use the pool wall as part of the barrier if the ladder or entry steps are removable or have a lockable gate. Pool barriers must be in place before the pool is filled. An inspection is required. Contact Community Development at (847) 368-5200.
Failure to install required pool barriers may result in stop-work orders, denial of occupancy, and fines. Non-compliant barriers must be corrected before the pool can be used.
