Schaumburg mandates barriers around all residential swimming pools with specific height, gate, and construction requirements. Pool barriers must prevent unsupervised child access and meet International Building Code standards adopted by the village.
All residential swimming pools in Schaumburg must be enclosed by a barrier meeting the requirements of the International Building Code as adopted by the village. Barriers must be at least 48 inches high with no openings that allow passage of a 4-inch sphere. Gates in pool barriers must be self-closing and self-latching with the latch on the pool side at least 54 inches above grade. The barrier must completely encircle the pool area. Dwelling walls may form part of the barrier if all doors with direct pool access have self-closing mechanisms and audible alarms. Above-ground pools with walls at least 48 inches high and removable or lockable ladders may satisfy barrier requirements. Pool barrier compliance is verified during building permit inspections. Contact Community Development at (847) 895-4500.
Non-compliant pool barriers may result in immediate orders to install compliant fencing. Pools may be required to be drained until proper barriers are in place. Fines for barrier violations can reach $500.
