Orland Park requires a 4-foot minimum barrier around all swimming pools 24 inches or deeper, with self-closing, self-latching gates. Above-ground pools may use the pool wall as a barrier if access ladder is removable or lockable.
Per Orland Park's adopted building code (based on the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code), all swimming pools and spas with water depth of 24 inches or more must be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches (4 feet) high measured from the outside. Barrier openings must not allow passage of a 4-inch sphere. Gates must be self-closing, self-latching, and open outward away from the pool, with latch release at least 54 inches above grade. Above-ground pools 48 inches or higher may use the pool wall as a barrier provided the access ladder is removable or lockable. Inflatable pools holding 24+ inches of water also require barriers. Doors from the house to the pool must have alarms or self-closing devices. Permits are required for all pools. Contact Orland Park Building Division at (708) 403-6200.
Pool barrier violations are taken seriously due to drowning risk. Fines start at $100 per day until corrected. Pools may be ordered drained and operating permits revoked until barriers are compliant.
