Oak Park, IL Fence Regulations: Pool Barriers (2026)

The Village of Oak Park enforces pool barrier requirements consistent with the Illinois Swimming Pool and Bathing Beach Act and the International Residential Code. All residential swimming pools, including in-ground and above-ground pools with a water depth of 24 inches or more, must be surrounded by a barrier at least 48 inches in height. The barrier must be constructed to prevent climbing and must not have openings larger than 4 inches that could allow a child to pass through. Gates in the barrier must be self-closing and self-latching, with latches positioned at least 54 inches above grade or equipped with a release mechanism accessible only from the pool side. The dwelling wall may serve as one side of the pool barrier if doors opening to the pool area have self-closing devices and alarms. Above-ground pools with sides 48 inches or taller may use the pool wall as the barrier if ladder or entry steps are removable or have a lockable gate.
