Oak Park prohibits barbed wire, razor wire, and electric fences in residential areas. Historic districts have additional material restrictions requiring compatibility with neighborhood character. Chain link in front yards may be restricted in certain areas.
The Village of Oak Park restricts certain fence materials in residential zoning districts. Barbed wire, razor wire, concertina wire, and electric or electrified fences are prohibited in all residential areas. These materials may only be used in industrial or certain commercial zones with specific approval. In residential districts, acceptable materials include wood (cedar, pine, treated lumber), vinyl or PVC, ornamental iron or aluminum, and chain link. However, properties within Oak Park's historic districts may face additional scrutiny from the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC), which can require materials and designs that are compatible with the historic architectural character of the neighborhood. Chain link fences in front yards may be restricted or discouraged in certain residential areas and historic districts. Fences made of unconventional materials (corrugated metal, pallets, salvage materials) are generally not permitted in residential areas. Fence staining and painting must be in colors consistent with neighborhood character, and the Village may enforce maintenance standards for fence appearance. Contact the Building Department at (708) 358-5440 for material guidance specific to your property location.
Fences made of prohibited materials must be removed or replaced. Properties in historic districts may be required to modify fences that do not meet HPC design standards. Fines may be assessed for non-compliant materials.
