Cook County requires a permit for ALL fences in unincorporated areas, regardless of material or height. Permits are obtained through the Department of Building and Zoning ePermit system. No fence may be constructed without prior approval.
A permit is required for all fences constructed of any material at any height on unincorporated Cook County properties. The permit application is submitted through the Cook County Department of Building and Zoning ePermit system (bzpermits.cookcountyil.gov). Applications must include a site plan showing the proposed fence location, height, and materials. The fence must comply with Cook County Zoning Ordinance setback requirements. The Department reviews applications for compliance with height limits, material restrictions, and setback requirements. Building and Zoning conducts plan reviews and may require inspections. Fees apply per the Chapter 32 fee schedule.
Fence without permit: building and zoning violation. $100β$1,000 fine per offense. May be required to remove fence. 30 days to comply.
