Cook County Zoning Ordinance permits fences of wood, plastic, metal, wire mesh, masonry, and similar materials. Barbed wire and electric fencing are restricted in residential zones. All materials require permit review.
The Cook County Zoning Ordinance defines a fence as a structure constructed of wood, plastic, metal, wire mesh, masonry, or other similar material. In residential districts, barbed wire, razor wire, and electric fencing are generally restricted. Chain link, wood, vinyl, and ornamental metal are common approved materials. All fence materials must be identified on the permit application and reviewed by the Department of Building and Zoning for compliance. Fence materials must be maintained in good condition and not create a hazard. The finished or more attractive side of the fence typically must face outward toward neighbors and public areas per standard zoning practice.
Prohibited materials: zoning violation, $100β$1,000 fine. Must remove or replace non-conforming materials. 30 days to comply.
