Chino Hills Development Code 16.06.120 limits fences to 4 feet in front yards (6 feet if open/transparent above 3 feet) and 6 feet in side/rear yards, requires durable materials, and sets corner sight-visibility rules under 16.06.080. Most fences are building-permit exempt but must still meet these zoning standards.
Fences in the City of Chino Hills must meet the standards in Development Code Section 16.06.120 (Fences, walls and hedges). Height limits apply by location: 4 feet in the required front yard (or 6 feet only where the portion above 3 feet is open material such as tubular steel or transparent material such as acrylic), and 6 feet in the required side and rear yards; front-yard hedges are limited to 4 feet. Overall height is measured from the highest point of the wall or fence to the lowest grade within the property boundaries, and fence posts may extend up to 4 inches above the fence. The city directs that fences and walls be built of durable materials such as masonry, stone, brick, concrete, or wrought iron/tubular steel; wood fencing is allowed for single-family properties when it is complementary to the architectural style and maintained. Corner lots are further constrained by the sight-visibility rules in Section 16.06.080, which keep clear-corner areas free of obstructions above roughly 30 inches so drivers can see. Most ordinary fences are exempt from a building permit (6 feet or less in side/rear yards, 4 feet or less in front), but retaining walls and any fence/wall combination over 6 feet require a permit. Hillside and equestrian-overlay properties may have additional considerations, so owners should confirm with the Community Development Department.
Fences that exceed the 4-foot front or 6-foot side/rear height limits, obstruct a corner sight-visibility area under 16.06.080, or are poorly built or unmaintained violate Development Code 16.06.120 and are subject to Chino Hills code enforcement.
