Rutherford County requires fence posts to be set at least 2 feet deep, fences positioned so support members do not face the street, and 5-foot clearance around electrical transformers and pedestals. Owners must keep fences in good repair.
Under Section 1101 B of the Rutherford County Zoning Ordinance, all fence posts and supports must be set into the ground a minimum depth of 2 feet (alternatives allowed after consulting Planning & Engineering and Building and Codes). Fences must be positioned so that the support wood, posts, and cross members do not face the street. A 5-foot clearance must be kept around all sides of an electrical transformer (10 feet on the padlocked side) and around electrical pedestals. Owners are responsible for maintaining the fence in good repair; the Director of Building and Codes may order a deteriorated fence repaired, replaced, or removed.
A fence in deteriorated condition, broken, or leaning substantially out of plumb may be ordered repaired, replaced, or removed by the Director of Building and Codes under the ordinance.
