Murfreesboro, TN Fire Regulations: Fire Pits & Backyard Fires (2026)

Code § 12-50 defines a 'recreational fire' as an outdoor fire burning materials other than rubbish, kept outside an incinerator, outdoor fireplace, portable outdoor fireplace, grill, or fire pit, with a total fuel area of three feet or less in diameter and two feet or less in height, used for pleasure, religious, ceremonial, cooking, or warmth. Only 'permitted materials', brush, tree limbs and branches, and clean unpainted, uncoated, untreated wood, may be burned; tires, vinyl siding, plastics, paper products, asphalt shingles, and household trash are all barred as non-permitted materials under the same section. Recreational fires must stay 25 feet from structures and be constantly attended per § 12-51.
