Murfreesboro, TN Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

It shall be unlawful for any person to erect a fence with barbed wire or a fence of any kind on which barbed wire is used. All such fences are declared to be nuisances and dangerous to the public, and it shall be the duty of the owner of such fence to remove the same within five days after notice from the City Manager or the designated representative. Provided, however:

(A)A farm qualified and registered with the Property Assessor of Rutherford County as agricultural, forest and open space land as defined in T.C.A. § 67-5-1001, et seq., is exempt from this section.(B)This section shall not be construed to prevent anyone from stretching barbed wire on the top of any fence over 6 ft. high to prevent anyone from climbing over same.(C)Applications for a permit for relief from this section may be made to the Board of Zoning Appeals. Any permits granted by the Board hereunder shall contain all conditions upon which said permit has been granted and shall specify the exact location where the owner is permitted to use barbed wire and the exact height and number of strands that may be used.
