Davidson County, TN Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Metro Nashville Zoning Code §17.12.030 (Residential District Standards) and §17.40 (Accessory Uses) regulate fence materials by zoning district. Permitted residential materials include wood (cedar, pressure-treated pine, composite), vinyl/PVC, wrought iron, aluminum, masonry (brick, stone, stucco), and chain-link. Chain-link fences are permitted but commonly prohibited in front yards within Conservation Overlay districts and Urban Design Overlays (UDO) such as the Gulch, 12 South, and East Nashville. Barbed wire, razor wire, and concertina wire are prohibited in all residential zones (R6-R80, RS, RM) under §17.12.030, and electric fences are restricted to AR2a (agricultural residential) and industrial zones per §17.16. Historic overlays regulated by the Metro Historic Zoning Commission (MHZC) under Metro Code §17.40.410 require Certificate of Appropriateness for new fences in Germantown, Edgefield, Lockeland Springs-East End, Richland-West End, Rutledge Hill, and other designated districts; chain-link and vinyl are typically disapproved in favor of wood picket or wrought iron. Tennessee's humid subtropical climate (USDA zone 7a) promotes rot and insect damage, making pressure-treated lumber, cedar, or composite materials industry standard. HOAs in Hillwood, Green Hills, and Belle Meade satellite city routinely prohibit chain-link entirely via CC&Rs. Belle Meade and Forest Hills municipal codes are generally stricter than Metro.
