Monmouth County's 53 municipalities each set fence material standards through zoning. Typical residential districts allow wood (cedar, pressure-treated), vinyl/PVC, aluminum, wrought iron, and composite. Chain-link is commonly restricted in front yards across Monmouth (Rumson, Fair Haven, Red Bank, Spring Lake). Barbed wire and razor wire are prohibited in residential zones throughout the county. Historic districts — including Red Bank (Broad Street), Long Branch (West End Historic District), Allenhurst, Ocean Grove (within Neptune Township), and Spring Lake — require HPC approval for fence materials and typically require wood picket or ornamental iron appropriate to period architecture. Salt-air corrosion makes aluminum and vinyl preferred over steel in shore towns. The 'finished side' (smooth face) must typically face outward toward neighbors per most Monmouth zoning codes. Coastal flood zones (VE/AE) may have additional material restrictions to prevent debris during storm surge. HOAs in Colts Neck, Holmdel, and Marlboro planned developments add further restrictions.
