Omaha, NE Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Omaha City Code § 43-174 permits fences built from wood, wire, metal, concrete, masonry, plastic, or any other material the building official approves. But it is unlawful to erect, install, or use barbed wire, razor wire, concertina strands, or similar materials anywhere in the city. The only exception is barbed wire on fences around cemeteries, public playgrounds, public recreation or amusement areas, public institutions, public utilities, factories, storage and salvage yards, airports, and agricultural land used to control livestock. Where barbed wire is allowed, § 43-175 caps it at three strands, mounted on supports angled at least 60 degrees from horizontal, with the bottom strand at least six feet above grade. A fence permit is separately required under § 43-172, and height, openings, location, and finish facing must also comply with the Chapter 55 zoning rules.
