Unincorporated Washoe County restricts barbed/razor livestock fencing in front yards to lots over one acre, limits specialty court fences to non-solid, non-reflective materials, and bans reflective wall/fence materials that blend poorly with the background.
Under Washoe County Development Code Section 110.406.50, barbed wire or razor wire livestock fencing in front yards is allowed only on lots larger than one (1) acre. Specialty fences (for tennis, racquetball, basketball or similar courts) may not be solid, may not prevent viewing through the fence, must be a color that blends with the background, and may in no instance be of a reflective material. The county Fences and Retaining Walls handout notes that on lots over one acre using strictly range fencing (t-bar and wire only), no permit is needed, but wood or any other material requires a building permit. Reno and Sparks impose their own material rules inside city limits.
Prohibited materials, such as reflective specialty fencing or front-yard barbed wire on small lots, are Development Code violations subject to correction orders.
