Code Sec. 6-14 requires a fence, wall, or building around any pool holding water over 18 inches deep. The barrier cannot have openings larger than four inches in any dimension, must be anchored firmly, must resist climbing from outside, and cannot be built of wire. Gates and doors need self-closing and self-latching hardware, with the latch mounted on the upper quarter of the gate on the inside. A dwelling door forming part of the enclosure must be equipped the same way.
A non-compliant pool barrier must be corrected before the pool is used. Building-code safety violations carry fines up to $2,000, each day a separate offense, plus liability exposure for accidents.
