Arlington Heights permits backyard recreational fires in approved portable devices such as fire pits, chimineas, and fire bowls. Fires must burn only clean wood, be attended at all times, and maintain safe distances from structures and property lines.
Recreational backyard fires in the Village of Arlington Heights are allowed in commercially manufactured portable fire pits, chimineas, and fire bowls. Fires must burn only clean, dry, seasoned firewood or manufactured fire logs. Burning of yard waste, trash, cardboard, treated wood, or any other materials is prohibited. The fire device must be placed on a non-combustible surface and positioned at least 15 feet from any structure, fence, or overhanging branches. Fires must be attended by a responsible adult at all times and must be fully extinguished before being left unattended. The fire must not produce excessive smoke that creates a nuisance for neighbors. The Fire Department may order any fire extinguished if it poses a safety hazard or generates complaints.
Unattended fires or fires burning prohibited materials may result in extinguishment orders and fines. Repeat violations may lead to fines of $100 to $500.
