Backyard recreational fires are allowed in Blaine without a fire department permit if you burn only natural firewood, keep flames under 36 inches in a pit no more than three feet wide, maintain a 25-foot setback (10 feet for a covered manufactured pit), avoid winds over 10 mph, and keep an adult and garden hose on hand.
Residents of Blaine may have backyard recreational fires for warmth, cooking, or enjoyment without a fire department permit, provided they follow the city's recreational fire regulations. The fire must be contained in a manufactured freestanding fire pit or ring, or in a pit not exceeding three feet in diameter, and flames must stay under 36 inches in height. Only natural firewood cut into pieces shorter than two feet may be burned. Burning yard waste, leaves, lumber, pallets, scrap wood, cardboard, paper, or garbage is prohibited, and flammable or combustible liquid accelerants may not be used to start or feed the fire. The fire must be at least 25 feet from any structure or combustible material, including houses, garages, sheds, wood piles, and wooden fences; a manufactured pit with both a screen and a cover may be 10 feet away. An adult must constantly attend and supervise the fire until it is completely extinguished, and a connected garden hose must be readily available. Fires are not allowed when wind speeds exceed 10 mph, and recreational fires are not permitted on commercial, industrial, or construction sites. Fire officials may order any non-compliant fire to be extinguished immediately. During periods of elevated regional fire danger, the Minnesota DNR and Anoka County may impose burning restrictions that affect outdoor fires; check current conditions before lighting a fire.
Non-compliant backyard fires are misdemeanor offenses requiring a court appearance, punishable by fines up to $1,000 and/or 90 days in jail. Fire officials can require immediate extinguishment. Report illegal burning by calling 911.
