Cedar Hill, TX Fire Regulations: Backyard Fires (2026)

Cedar Hill follows the International Fire Code as amended: open burning of yard waste, trash, or construction debris is prohibited inside city limits, with limited exceptions for permitted agricultural burning in designated rural areas and fire-department training burns. Recreational fires are permitted only when (1) contained in an approved appliance — a manufactured fire pit, chiminea, or in-ground pit with a screen — no larger than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet tall, (2) located at least 25 feet from any structure, fence, or combustible vegetation, (3) burning only clean, dry, seasoned firewood (no leaves, painted wood, pallets, or trash), (4) attended at all times by an adult with a charged hose or extinguisher within reach, and (5) not occurring during a Dallas County or city burn ban — burn bans are common July through October due to escarpment fire risk. Gas-fueled fire pits and approved patio appliances are exempt from the 25-ft setback when used per manufacturer instructions. Smoke that creates a nuisance for neighbors can be ordered extinguished even when otherwise compliant.
