Recreational fires in Dallas are allowed in approved fire pits and containers under the Dallas Fire Code. Fires must be supervised, at a safe distance from structures, and not produce offensive smoke.
The Dallas Fire Code (Chapter 16) permits recreational fires in approved containers and fire pits provided they are conducted safely. Portable outdoor fireplaces and fire pits must be at least 15 feet from structures and combustible materials. A fire extinguisher or garden hose must be readily available. Fires must be constantly attended. Open burning that produces offensive smoke or creates a hazard is prohibited regardless of the container used. During drought conditions or burn bans issued by Dallas County, all outdoor fires may be prohibited. The fire code official may order extinguishment of any fire deemed hazardous.
Violations of fire code provisions carry fines up to $2,000. Fires causing property damage or injury may result in additional criminal charges.
