Greensboro prohibits burning leaves, brush, trash, and refuse within city limits under Section 10-23. Only recreational fires and permitted commercial clearing allowed.
Greensboro Code of Ordinances Section 10-23 prohibits the burning of leaves, brush, trash, or any other refuse within the corporate limits of the city. This ban applies to all residential properties and effectively prohibits traditional backyard burning of yard waste. The only exceptions are recreational fires meeting the size and setback requirements (3-foot diameter maximum, 25 feet from structures) and burning of brush by commercial contractors clearing large open areas with a fire prevention bureau permit and compliance with NC DEQ air quality regulations. Curbside yard waste collection is available through the citys solid waste services, making open burning of yard debris unnecessary. Guilford County also enforces illegal burning regulations outside Greensboro city limits, with violations reportable to Environmental Services. NC DEQ open burning rules prohibit burning within 500 feet of a dwelling in a predominantly residential area without the occupants permission. The Greensboro Fire Department and Guilford County may pursue civil penalties for illegal burning. During statewide burn bans issued by the NC Forest Service, all outdoor burning including recreational fires may be suspended.
