Greensboro Sec. 18-50 bans amplified sound plainly audible from 50 ft on public property 11 PM-7 AM. Amplified sound audible beyond 150 ft prohibited citywide anytime.
Greensboro Code of Ordinances Section 18-50 (Unlawful Noise-Producing Activities), amended by Ordinance 2022-1034 in October 2022, regulates outdoor amplified sound. Between 11 PM and 7 AM, it is unlawful to play, operate, or cause any sound amplification device, amplified musical instrument, or sound reproduction device that creates audible sound outside any building. On public property, amplified sound that is plainly audible from 50 feet or more is prohibited during these hours. An existing broader provision prohibits amplified sound audible at more than 150 feet anywhere in the city at any time. Special events under Article IX of Chapter 26 (Streets and Sidewalks) may obtain permits allowing amplified sound under specific conditions. The 2022 amendment strengthened enforcement tools. Playing radios, televisions, or musical instruments so as to annoy or disturb the quiet of persons of normal sensibilities in any dwelling is also prohibited. N.C.G.S. 14-288.4(a)(2) (disorderly conduct by disturbing the peace) provides additional state-level authority.
Violation of Sec. 18-50 is a misdemeanor. Fines set by court. Equipment may be subject to seizure for repeated violations.
