Greensboro, NC Noise Ordinances: Barking Dogs (2026)

Greensboro's general noise ordinance no longer has an animal-noise clause, § 18-41, cross-referenced in Chapter 5 as the 'animal noise' provision, was repealed by Ord. No. ' Barking complaints instead run through the animal-nuisance framework in § 5-5. Subsection (2) makes it unlawful to keep an animal in a manner that constitutes a public nuisance, and clause (e) names the specific conduct: allowing or permitting an animal to bark, whine, howl, crow or cackle in a long-continued or frequent fashion so as to interfere with the reasonable use and enjoyment of neighboring premises.

The clause covers more than dogs, any animal noise of that character qualifies, and does not set fixed decibel levels or quiet hours; the standard is whether the noise is long-continued or frequent enough to interfere with a neighbor's reasonable enjoyment of their own property. Clause (g) of the same subsection separately covers an animal that habitually or repeatedly chases, snaps at, attacks or barks at pedestrians or other animals, which can apply alongside a straight noise complaint. § 160A-175.
