Swimming pool barriers in Greensboro must comply with the 2018 North Carolina Residential Code Appendix V and the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code as adopted by the state. The barrier must be at least 48 inches above grade measured on the exterior side. The maximum gap between the bottom of the barrier and grade is 2 inches. Openings in the barrier cannot allow passage of a 4-inch-diameter sphere. For fences with horizontal and vertical members spaced less than 45 inches apart, horizontal members must face the pool side and vertical members must be spaced no more than 1.75 inches apart. If horizontal members are 45 inches or more apart, vertical spacing can be up to 4 inches. Lattice fencing requires diagonal members no more than 1.75 inches apart. All pedestrian access gates must open outward away from the pool, be self-closing, and have a self-latching device. The latch release mechanism must be at least 54 inches above grade or on the pool side with a shield preventing reach-through access. A building permit from the Engineering and Inspections Department is required for all residential swimming pool installations, including the barrier. Pool barriers are subject to inspection before the pool may be filled and used.
