Greensboro fences must be on the owners property, 2 feet from building walls, and clear of intersection sight triangles. Historic districts require design review.
The Greensboro Land Development Ordinance Section 30-9-4 establishes general requirements for all fences and walls. Fences must be located entirely on the owners property with no encroachment into rights-of-way or easements. A minimum 2-foot clearance from building walls is required, except where a fence projects from a building wall. Fences cannot obstruct natural water drainage in streams, creeks, swales, or ditches. At street intersections, the sight-distance triangle prohibits obstructions between 30 inches and 96 inches above average grade. The minor street baseline is 20 feet, and the major street baseline varies by speed limit from 150 feet at 25 mph to 500 feet at 55 mph. Properties in historic overlay districts must comply with applicable design guidelines, which may require review by the Historic Preservation Commission before installation. All fences must be maintained in a plumb and safe condition under Section 30-9-4.8. Neglected, leaning, or deteriorating fences constitute an ordinance violation. The city may issue notices of violation requiring repair or removal. Fences within required landscaping or planting yards are subject to review as part of the landscape plan.
