Greensboro limits residential fences to 4 feet near streets, 6 feet along thoroughfares, and 7 feet elsewhere per LDO Section 30-9-4. Commercial fences may reach 8 feet.
The Greensboro Land Development Ordinance (LDO) Section 30-9-4 establishes fence and wall height limits based on location and zoning district. In residential zones, fences within 15 feet of any public or private street right-of-way cannot exceed 4 feet. Side or rear yards adjoining a major or minor thoroughfare allow up to 6 feet if there is no driveway access and no sight-distance interference. All other residential areas permit fences up to 7 feet. Commercial, industrial, and institutional uses allow up to 8 feet unless the fence meets principal building setbacks or is at least 15 feet from all property lines. In UMU, AO, and NS districts, fences between the principal structure and a public right-of-way are limited to 3 feet. Recreational and agricultural fences may go up to 12 feet for uses like ballfield backstops or tennis courts. Height is measured at the highest point of the fence section, excluding columns or posts, from grade on the side nearest the abutting property or street. Posts may extend up to 18 inches above the fence height and must be separated by at least 4 feet horizontally except at gates.
