Fire pit rules in Greensboro, NC β also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances β cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
Greensboro allows fire pits with a 3-foot max diameter, 25 feet from structures. Portable fireplaces need 15 feet clearance. No burning of leaves, brush, or trash.
Under the Greensboro Code of Ordinances Chapter 10 (Fire Prevention and Protection), recreational fires are permitted with specific restrictions. The total fuel area cannot exceed 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height. Recreational fires must be at least 25 feet from any structure or combustible materials. Portable outdoor fireplaces must follow the manufacturer instructions and be operated at least 15 feet from structures. Other pre-approved fire containers may also be used at a minimum distance of 15 feet from structures. The burning of leaves, brush, trash, or any other refuse is prohibited within city limits under Section 10-23 and does not qualify as a recreational fire. Only clean, dry firewood should be used in recreational fire pits. The Greensboro Fire Department may impose temporary burn bans during periods of high fire danger, drought, or poor air quality. The NC Forest Service may also issue statewide burn bans that apply within Greensboro. Residents should check current conditions before lighting any outdoor fire. Fires creating a nuisance to neighbors through excessive smoke may be subject to enforcement action.
