Recreational backyard fires in Homestead are permitted in approved containers like chimineas, portable fire bowls, and outdoor fireplaces. Fires must be attended, kept a safe distance from structures, and use only approved fuels. Open ground fires are not permitted in residential areas. Standard Florida Fire Prevention Code applies.
Homestead allows recreational backyard fires in approved containers including chimineas, portable fire bowls, manufactured outdoor fireplaces, and similar enclosed or semi-enclosed devices. These fires must be attended at all times by a responsible adult and positioned at least 15 feet from structures, fences, and overhanging vegetation. Only clean firewood, manufactured fire logs, or charcoal should be used β burning trash, yard waste, treated wood, or plastics is prohibited. Open ground fires (campfire-style) are not permitted in residential areas. The fire must be small enough to be quickly extinguished if needed, and a garden hose or fire extinguisher should be within reach. Wind conditions above 15 mph should preclude fire pit use. Homestead's tropical vegetation and generally dry winter conditions make fire safety precautions especially important. The fire department may impose temporary restrictions during drought conditions.
Unattended fires or fires creating hazards face fines of $100 to $500. Fires causing damage to neighboring property may result in civil liability and criminal charges. Contact Homestead Fire at (305) 224-4600.
