Humble permits recreational backyard fires in approved containers such as chimineas and portable fire bowls under the International Fire Code. Fires must be attended at all times, kept a safe distance from structures, and must not create a nuisance to neighboring properties.
The City of Humble regulates recreational backyard fires through its adoption of the International Fire Code (IFC). Small recreational fires in approved portable containers such as chimineas, fire bowls, and manufactured fire pits are generally permitted without a permit, provided they meet safety requirements. Fires must be constantly attended by a responsible adult and a means of extinguishment (garden hose or fire extinguisher) must be readily available. Portable fire containers should be placed on a non-combustible surface and positioned at least 15 feet from structures, fences, and combustible materials. Open burning of yard waste, trash, or construction debris is prohibited within the city limits under the fire code and Harris County burn ban regulations. The Harris County Fire Marshal may impose additional burn bans during drought conditions, which apply to all outdoor fires including recreational fires. Fires that produce excessive smoke creating a nuisance to neighbors may be ordered extinguished. Contact Community Development at (281) 446-4331 for fire safety questions.
Open burning of prohibited materials can result in fines and fire department response. Unattended fires or fires violating burn ban conditions may result in citations. Fires creating a public nuisance may be ordered immediately extinguished.
