The Michigan Fireworks Safety Act (MCL 28.451 et seq.) lets adults buy and use consumer fireworks like aerials and firecrackers. Under MCL 28.457, a city, village or township may enact an ordinance regulating the ignition, discharge and use of consumer fireworks, including hours. But that ordinance may not restrict use, after 11 a.m., on the protected days: December 31 to 1 a.m. January 1; the Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day until 11:45 p.m.; June 29 to July 4 until 11:45 p.m.; July 5 if a Friday or Saturday until 11:45 p.m.; and the Saturday and Sunday before Labor Day until 11:45 p.m. Ottawa County itself does not zone or regulate fireworks; check Holland, Grand Haven or your township ordinance.
Violating a local fireworks ordinance is a municipal civil infraction with a fine up to $1,000, which the local unit retains; use while intoxicated is a separate offense.
