Iowa legalized consumer fireworks in 2017. In unincorporated Polk County the state window applies: use is allowed June 1-July 8 and December 10-January 3, only 9 a.m.-10 p.m. (later on July 4 and New Year's), and only on your own property or with the owner's consent.
Iowa Code 727.2 lets any person possess, use, or explode consumer fireworks, but counties and cities may prohibit or limit them by ordinance. Polk County has not adopted a stricter unincorporated ordinance, so the statutory limits in 727.2(4) govern: days June 1-July 8 and December 10-January 3; hours 9 a.m.-10 p.m., extended to 11 p.m. on July 4 and the surrounding weekends and to 12:30 a.m. after December 31. You may only use them on your own real property or property whose owner consented. Incorporated cities (Des Moines, Ankeny, West Des Moines) impose much narrower windowsβcheck the specific city.
Using or exploding consumer fireworks outside the allowed days, times, or places is a simple misdemeanor; a court shall not order imprisonment for that limitation violation.
