Fishers, IN Fire Regulations: Outdoor Burning (2026)

Outdoor burning in Fishers is governed by the Fishers Department of Fire and Emergency Services' permitted-burning guidance together with Indiana's open-burning rules administered by IDEM at 326 IAC 4-1. Indiana generally prohibits open burning under 326 IAC 4-1-2, allowing only specific exempt activities such as recreational and ceremonial fires, cooking fires, and limited residential burning of clean wood products, paper, and charcoal (326 IAC 4-1-3). Burning trash, garbage, plastics, and similar materials is prohibited. In Fishers, the fire department's guidance states that only wood products may be burned, that burning is allowed only between 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., and that fires must not be within 50 feet of any structure or public right-of-way. Burning must be in a vented noncombustible container and constantly attended by an adult with a working garden hose or a 10-pound ABC fire extinguisher. Open burning is absolutely prohibited in apartment complexes and mobile home parks. Any fire that creates an air pollution problem, a nuisance, or a fire hazard must be extinguished by the Fishers Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Under the state recreational-fire exemption, fires must be attended at all times, conducted during daylight, kept at least 500 feet from any fuel storage area or pipeline, and the pile must be 1,000 cubic feet or less; piles over 125 cubic feet require 24-hour advance notice to the local fire and health departments.
