Charleston follows the West Virginia State Fire Code (adopted IFC) for residential propane storage, generally limiting unprotected portable cylinders on porches and inside structures. Larger tanks require setbacks from buildings and property lines.
Through Chapter 16, Charleston adopts the West Virginia State Fire Code which incorporates the International Fire Code chapter on liquefied petroleum gases. Residential limits restrict the aggregate quantity of propane stored at one-and-two-family dwellings, with portable DOT cylinders such as 20-pound grill tanks generally allowed in limited quantity outdoors. Storage inside dwellings is restricted, and larger ASME tanks for whole-home heating must observe NFPA 58 setbacks from buildings, property lines, and ignition sources, scaled to tank size. Bulk propane retail or distribution sites face additional permit and setback rules. The Charleston Fire Marshal can inspect installations and order corrections.
Improper propane storage can result in fire code citations, removal orders, fines, and liability for any explosion or fire damage caused by noncompliant installations.
