Daly City, CA Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

California Fire Code Chapter 61 (Liquefied Petroleum Gases), adopted by Daly City through Title 4 (Public Safety), regulates propane storage statewide. For one- and two-family dwellings (CFC 6104.2), the aggregate water capacity of LP-Gas containers stored outside of buildings is limited to 500 gallons WC without separation requirements; cylinders 125-500 gallons WC must sit at least 10 ft from any important building or property line. Portable cylinders (20-lb BBQ tanks, ~5 gallons WC) may be stored outside on a patio or in a well-ventilated location; storage inside dwellings is prohibited under CFC 6109.13. Maximum portable cylinder size allowed inside a residence is one pound (CFC 6109.13). Cylinders must be protected from physical damage and tampering. Refilling: only DOT-stamped cylinders within their 12-year inspection window may be filled. Sale and transport of propane requires a Fire Code Permit under CFC 105.5.30 if exceeding threshold quantities. Multi-family and commercial storage thresholds are stricter and trigger Hazardous Materials Management Plans. Daly City Building Code (Title 12) requires gas appliance installation per the California Mechanical Code.
