Lubbock County has no propane-storage zoning. LP-gas storage and installation are regulated statewide by the Texas Railroad Commission under NFPA 58, which sets tank setbacks from buildings and property lines. Inside the City of Lubbock, the adopted International Fire Code also applies. Only licensed dealers may install larger tanks.
Texas counties cannot zone, so unincorporated Lubbock County sets no propane rule. The Railroad Commission of Texas regulates LP-gas storage and installation statewide under 16 TAC Chapter 9, which adopts NFPA 58 (the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code). NFPA 58 sets minimum separation distances by container size, for example a 125-500 gallon aboveground tank must sit at least 10 feet from a building and the property line. LP-gas containers may not be used in basements or pits where heavier-than-air gas can collect. Only RRC-licensed LP-gas companies may set larger tanks. Inside the City of Lubbock, the adopted 2021 International Fire Code (city code art. 10.03) also governs cylinder storage and quantities.
Improper propane installation violates Railroad Commission LP-gas rules and can bring RRC enforcement; in the city, code officials may issue correction orders and citations.
