Lubbock follows the International Fire Code and NFPA 58 for propane storage. Residential cylinders are limited in size near buildings, and larger tanks require permits from Lubbock Fire Rescue and inspection by the Texas Railroad Commission.
Lubbock has adopted the International Fire Code, which incorporates NFPA 58 Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code. Residential propane cylinders for grills are limited to two twenty-pound containers per dwelling, and refilled cylinders must be stored outside in ventilated areas at least ten feet from doors, windows, and air intakes. Larger tanks above 125 gallons water capacity require a Lubbock Fire Rescue permit, setbacks from buildings and property lines, and impact protection. The Texas Railroad Commission regulates propane dealers, dispensers, and tank installers under Texas Natural Resources Code Chapter 113. Tanks may not be stored indoors, in basements, or in attached garages.
Stop-use orders, removal at owner expense, citations under the IFC and LMC Chapter 7 fire code, and Railroad Commission enforcement against unlicensed installers or dealers.
