Residential propane storage follows the Washington State Fire Code (WAC 51-54A, Chapter 61 / NFPA 58). Larger tanks must meet setback distances from buildings and lot lines, multiple installations must be 25 feet apart, and any single installation is capped at 2,000 gallons water capacity in congested areas.
Clark County does not set its own propane rule; storage follows the Washington State Fire Code, which adopts IFC Chapter 61 (Liquefied Petroleum Gases) and NFPA 58 via WAC 51-54A. LP-gas containers must be located relative to buildings, public ways and adjoining lot lines per Table 6104.3, and containers with individual capacity under 125 gallons that aggregate to 500 gallons or more must use the aggregate distance. Where more than one installation is made, each must be separated by at least 25 feet, and within congested-area limits any single installation may not exceed 2,000 gallons water capacity. A permit is required for larger LP-gas systems.
Non-compliant installations can be red-tagged by the Clark County Fire Marshal; the fire code authorizes civil penalties and removal of unsafe LP-gas containers.
