Smoke detectors are mandatory in all Cuyahoga County residential dwellings under Ohio Residential Code RC 314. Detectors required in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every story. New construction since 2013 requires interconnected hardwired units with battery backup.
OAC 4101:8-3 adopts the Ohio Residential Code Section 314 and 315 requirements. Carbon monoxide detectors are also required outside sleeping areas in dwellings with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages. Landlords must install and maintain detectors per ORC 5321.04 habitability duties. Replacement every 10 years recommended per NFPA 72.
