Hudson County, NJ Fire Regulations: Wildfire Zones (2026)

Unlike rural/suburban New Jersey counties, Hudson County has no designated wildfire hazard zones. The NJ Forest Fire Service wildfire hazard maps (authority: N.J.S.A. 13:9-31) focus on forested areas with significant wildland fuels — primarily the Pinelands, Highlands, and parts of northwestern NJ. Hudson County's urban fabric (Jersey City, Hoboken, Union City) means the fire concerns are different: dense row-house and brownstone construction with shared walls, combustible rooftop decks, lithium-ion battery fires, and e-bike/e-scooter fires. The NJ Uniform Fire Code (N.J.A.C. 5:70) governs those hazards. Jersey City and Hoboken have specific ordinances on rooftop deck construction materials, required sprinkler installation in new multi-family construction, and lithium-ion battery storage. Residents in Hudson County's urban zones should focus on smoke alarm maintenance, carbon monoxide detectors, and sprinkler systems rather than defensible space. Owners with second homes in WUI-mapped New Jersey counties (Burlington, Ocean, Sussex, etc.) face different requirements.
