Manhattan has virtually no wildfire risk. The borough is fully developed urban area with minimal wildland-urban interface. No formal wildfire hazard zones apply in New York County.
New York County is coterminous with the densely developed Borough of Manhattan, which has essentially no wildland-urban interface, no forested hillsides, and no designated very high fire hazard severity zones comparable to those in western states. The NYC Department of Parks and Recreation manages several parks including Central Park, Inwood Hill Park, and Fort Tryon Park that contain forested areas, but these are surrounded by urban development and are patrolled and maintained by the Parks Department and FDNY. In dry seasons the Parks Department may issue red flag advisories prohibiting all open flames and smoking in parks. Residents in Manhattan do not need to comply with state wildfire building standards because no Wildland-Urban Interface Code applies. Fire risk is driven instead by building density, so FDNY focuses on structural fire prevention, facade inspection, and building code compliance.
