South Carolina allows lawful adults to carry a loaded handgun in a private vehicle without a permit under the 2024 constitutional carry expansion of Section 23-31-215.
Section 23-31-215 governs concealed weapon permits and was substantially amended by the 2024 Constitutional Carry/Second Amendment Preservation Act. Eligible adults aged 18 and older who are not prohibited persons may transport and carry a loaded handgun anywhere in their personal vehicle, including under the seat, in a glove box, console, or on their person. CWP holders retain reciprocity benefits for travel to other states. Sensitive locations such as schools, courthouses, detention facilities, and posted private property remain off-limits. Local governments cannot impose stricter vehicle-carry rules due to firearm preemption under Section 23-31-510.
Carrying in a prohibited location, by a disqualified person, or in a manner intending unlawful use is a misdemeanor with fines and possible jail time.
