Farmington Hills strictly limits customer traffic for home occupations. Under Sec. 34-4.15 of the Zoning Ordinance, no more than one (1) client or customer may be served at a time on the premises, and the activity may not be noticeable from the exterior. Non-resident employees and their vehicles are not permitted on or near the property.
Sec. 34-4.15 of the Farmington Hills Zoning Ordinance imposes some of the most restrictive customer-traffic limits in the region. The Home Occupation Registration checklist confirms that (1) the home occupation may not service more than one client or customer at a time on the premises, (2) there shall be no employees of the business other than residents of the dwelling unit located on the premises, and (3) no vehicles owned or operated by non-resident employees may be parked on or near the property. The activity itself must not be noticeable from the exterior, meaning the regular appearance of vehicles waiting on the street or queued in the driveway would itself constitute a violation. Permitted home occupations therefore tend to be by-appointment professional services (tax preparation, tutoring, music lessons, individual counseling) where one client arrives, departs, and is replaced — not businesses that draw simultaneous groups or continuous walk-in customers. Client parking must be accommodated on-property or on legal frontage; blocking driveways or using neighbors' property is grounds for code enforcement. Complaints about excessive traffic, parking, or visible activity are handled by Zoning and Code Enforcement at (248) 871-2520.
Exceeding the one-client-at-a-time limit, allowing non-resident employees on the premises, or creating noticeable traffic/parking impacts violates Sec. 34-4.15 and is grounds for revocation of the Home Occupation Registration plus general penalty enforcement under Chapter 1 of the City Code.
