Chicago limits customer and client visits to home occupations under Zoning Ordinance Section 17-9-0202 and Municipal Code Section 4-6-270. Restrictions on patrons, clients, and non-resident employees apply cumulatively to all home businesses in one dwelling.
Under Chicago Zoning Ordinance Section 17-9-0202 and Municipal Code Section 4-6-270, home occupations must limit customer traffic to maintain the residential character of the neighborhood. Restrictions on the number of patrons, clients, and non-resident external employees apply to all home occupations within a dwelling unit and are not cumulative β meaning the limits apply to the total across all businesses, not per business. The home occupation must not generate traffic, parking demand, or noise that would be unusual for a residential area. No exterior evidence of the business operation is permitted, including customer signage or excessive vehicle traffic. Deliveries associated with the home occupation must not disrupt the neighborhood. The Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection and the Department of Planning and Development share enforcement responsibility.
Excessive customer traffic that alters the residential character of the neighborhood may result in zoning enforcement action, cease-and-desist orders, or revocation of the home occupation license.
