A home occupation in unincorporated Cumberland County needs a County zoning permit and must meet Section 1002.A standards: work stays indoors, no more than one non-resident employee, one extra parking space, one light vehicle, and no off-premises nuisance.
Section 1002.A of the County Zoning Ordinance sets the operating standards a home occupation must satisfy, and Section 700 requires a zoning permit before use. All work must be conducted inside the designated building(s); the home occupation may employ no more than one person who does not reside on the premises; only one additional parking space is allowed; one vehicle no heavier than one ton may be used and kept on the premises; and the use may not create parking congestion, noise, vibration, odor, glare, fumes, or electrical/communications interference detectable off the premises. All federal, state, and local regulations, including County Environmental Health, must be met.
Operating without a zoning permit or breaching these standards is unlawful; the County can order the use to cease and assess civil penalties under NCGS 160D-404.
